As I was catching up on what Jill was covering at Writes Like She Talks, I came across this post that relates some experiences that some of you will relate to when it comes to the issue of free speech and those trying to gather signatures. In the Cleveland area it’s related to a tax being levied upon citizens without a vote so they are trying to “put it on the ballot”. Jill points out several posts, one of which is by Gloria Ferris on the topic of “Is Freedom of Speech At Risk Here?”. Gloria experiences nasty emails and other treatment that is designed to prevent them from trying to gather the needed signatures. Another blogger, Jeff Buster, is threatened with arrest because he dared to rest his clipboard on a trash can. This person is now under contract with the GCP. I am in a position to know who this person is and the nature of these kinds of tactics because I saw them first hand. I simply want to say, unless you have a highly politicized job there is nothing to fear, but county employees do largely depend on patronage. Let me also say that, by and large, these people are phonies and cowards and the vast majority of signers have nothing to worry about at all. Sign away! BTW, what does the 3-1 ratio refer to? The political powers that be in Lorain County are not as powerful as the ones in Cuyahoga County (thank heavens for small favors), but this case is by no means an isolated one. These same heavy-handed political tactics are used all across NEO on numerous occasions, and I think that these practices, in and of themselves, are scaring businesses and private sector jobs away. Absolutely, the people of Cuyahoga County are ceding too much power to persons such as Jimmy Dimora, and I certainly hope there will be a wake up call in the very near future to restore checks and balances.
