Have linked to this through Cool Cleveland, so am very late making a comment, but nevertheless, I applaud your writing on this subject, Gloria. I thought the comment in last week's CC tax hike forum about political arrogance was long overdue---arrogance is the essence of what we see from public officials nowadays. And the response by CVB president Dennis Roche was just appalling. Without using the words, he exactly parroted what you said in your opening paragrah: "the public wouldn't understand." His paternal, patronizing tone was highly offensive, I thought. He cited the example of the city of Chicago's government, saying (and I paraphrase) that they have long been considered the most arrogant of entities, but in the long term, their policies have proven to be the most beneficial ones. So, take THAT, all you Chicagoans who were too ignorant to know what was best for you! We truly do not need more power in authority who keep patting us on the head, telling us to go away and not bother our little heads about it, that they have the lock on what's best for the city, whether we know it or not.
